The Works

Welcome to The Works, a weekly playlist showcasing highlights from the latest and best classical albums, performed by some of the world’s finest artists and ensembles. This week’s headline track features the “Prélude” from César Franck’s Prélude, Fugue et Variation, which started life as an organ work, but in recent times has won huge popularity through an exquisite piano arrangement, beautifully showcased here by Mao Fujita. In its original version, Franck directs the melody to be played on a combination of flute and oboe stops. “One of the organ’s charms is that each voice can be clearly heard,” Fujita tells Apple Music Classical. “On the piano, however, this beautiful melody can be played more singingly, so I believe it can bring out another kind of charm.” The piece, he adds, inspires in him feelings of devotion. “It is quiet but strong,” he says, “and I don’t often feel this with other pieces.” During a concert tour to Salzburg, Fujita took the opportunity to hear organ music in a church. “It gave me so many insights,” adds Fujita. “These are precious experiences that I could not have had in Japan.” Don’t forget that we regularly update The Works, so if you find a piece of music or a performance you particularly love, be sure to add it to your library.
