• I’m using WordPress 6.7.2, PHP 8.4, and and Twenty Eleven v 4.8. Before updating from earlier versions of WordPress, the New Post page was fully formatted showing various editing options and a defined area in which the new post could be created. Now its just an empty page with ‘Add Title’ towards the top and just underneath it “Type / to choose a block” and a very plain right hand sidebar with two tabs ‘Post’ and ‘Block’ providing editing functions, categories etc. It does enable me to create a new post which then does display correctly in the web site. But the display is completely different from what it used to be. Is this how it should be now or is something wrong?

  • Hi @pwilsonofc,

What you’re describing is the WordPress Block Editor (Gutenberg), which has been the default editor since WordPress 5.0. It replaces the older Classic Editor, which had a more traditional text box and formatting toolbar. The new interface is designed around blocks, allowing for more flexibility in content creation. Why Does It Look Different?

    • When you updated WordPress, the Classic Editor (if you were using it) was replaced by Gutenberg.
    • The interface is now more minimalistic, with options appearing contextually based on the block you are working on.
    • The right sidebar has been simplified into Post and Block tabs for better organization.

If you prefer the older experience, you can install the Classic Editor plugin:

    1. Go to Plugins → Add New.
    2. Search for Classic Editor.
    3. Install and Activate it.
    4. Go to Settings → Writing and select “Classic Editor” as the default.

From your description, everything seems to be working as expected. Since you’re using an older theme like Twenty Eleven, some styling differences may not be fully optimized for the Block Editor.

Jos, many thanks for your clear explanation of what’s happened. I do prefer the classic format so I did as you suggested and loaded the Classic Editor which is now working just fine. Your help is much appreciated.
