Menu Keyboard Navigation

I’m currently working with a menu that also has a submenu. It works great, except I’d like to change something for accessibility purposes when it comes to navigating via the keyboard. Currently, when I hit the TAB key and navigate through the menu items, the submenu opens up automatically, and I have to TAB through every submenu item before I can get to the next main-level menu item. Is there a way to change it so a user has to hit enter before the submenu is opened?
